Right-Wing Militia Announces Racist – And Illegal – Voter Suppression Action In Wisconsin

Published On September 19, 2014 | By Bob Rowen |

Politicus is reporting that a right-wing militia group in Wisconsin is planning on taking voter suppression to new lows.

The group is using social media to announce their intentions. Dropping all pretense that their effort is anything short of an attempt to minimize election participation among Democrats and, in particular, African-Americans, they intend to send armed thugs into polling places in heavily Democratic districts to intimidate voters and in the hopes of reducing turnout. Some are turning to Twitter for help:

The group distributed photographs of individuals who may have outstanding warrants. The ones featured on their Facebook page are all of African-American individuals. Targeting people for voter suppression based on race is a clear violation of the Voting Rights Act.

Republicans across the country have done all they can to suppress voter turnout in the coming election and those in the state of Wisconsin have been in the forefront of that trend. Lead by Koch-supported Tea Party Governor Scott Walker – who is in a tight race with Democratic challenger Mary Burke – they recently passed legislation requiring new IDs. When that was struck down as unconstitutional, the state appealed and a panel of three Republican judges quickly voted to reinstated it.

Now  – with only a few weeks before the election – voters must scramble to get the needed photo IDs and a Republican official in the traffic department instructed staffers to “refrain from offering” them to customers in an effort to further inhibit voters from obtaining them.

The actions of the militia group speak aloud what Republicans have quietly felt all along, but seldom admit publicly. They don’t believe in Democracy. Godfather of the conservative movement, Paul Weyrich, co-founder of the Heritage Foundation and the Moral Majority, among others, famously said;

“Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome  – good government. They want everybody to vote. I don’t want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down.”

They understand that they can’t win an election if everybody votes. All they have left is to try to stop them.
