The Republican Civil War A Golden Opportunity For Dems

I hope liberals aren’t missing the greater message from Eric Cantor’s defeat last night (which was AWESOME) by the way!

Cantor curried favor with the Teabaggers five years ago, but failed to keep up with their radical shift to the right. And in the end, he was gobbled up by a monster that he himself helped create. Since 2009, the ideological “purity” of the Teaparty has been its driving force, and Cantor failed to recognize just how far they’ve moved away from him. “Conservative Values” amongst the Tea Party purists are now just different enough from the traditional Republican definition, that it cost the House Majority Leader his job. The GOP truly is experiencing an all-out civil war now, and as entertaining as it is to those of us on the outside looking in, there’s also a lesson to be learned from it.

Cantor got his ass whupped by a narrow constituency of the GOP, centered on an even more narrow issue – immigration. And while the results of Cantor’s defeat bodes well for Tammel, it’s an enormous defeat for the mainstream Republican agenda. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in Karl Rove’s office this morning.

So consider how this scenario might play out on the left. I can’t begin to tell you just how many progressives I’ve talked to who’ve told me that there’s no way they’d vote for Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton in 2016, for various reasons, mostly because they’ve been too conservative on on a pet issue … and they’ll only vote for Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, etc. Liberal purists for sure, but for all intents and purposes, unelectable in the present political climate. It’s that same “narrow focus” that took down Eric Cantor last night that could hand the White House to a Republican in the next Presidential Election.

If Trammell wins that seat, and I suspect he will, it’ll be because the alternative; Dave Brat, was just too extreme for that huge block of voters in the middle… Where elections are won. And THAT’S the lesson of June 10th 2014, not that Eric Cantor’s a smarmy asshole who deserved what he got. We already knew that.
