Harry Reid Calls For Constitutional Amendment To Overturn Citizens United (VIDEO)
“I oppose the notion that a big bank account should give billionaires, corporations or special interest groups a greater place in government than American voters. That is why I support the constitutional amendment proposed by two Senate Democrats, Senators Tom Udall and Michael Bennet, that curbs unlimited campaign spending.”
The 2010 Citizen’s United vs. The Federal Elections Commission Supreme Court decision allowed for unlimited corporate contributions to campaigns and candidates without having to disclose their donors, and resulted in a flood of dark money into the political process.
That decision paved the way for the 2014 McCutcheon vs. FEC decision, which removed the cap on aggregate campaign contributions and has been referred to as Citizens United part 2.
This flood of undisclosed contributions has gutted the foundations of our democracy, and effectively turned our government into a Plutocracy – whereby the wealthiest among us clearly yield the most political influence.
The 2012 elections were the most expensive in the nation’s history – approximately 600 billion dollars was spent. That is a staggering $700 million more than was spent in the second-most expensive election this country had ever seen, the lion’s share spent on often misleading or out-right false political advertisements and television commercials.
But unless we overturn these rulings and put our government back into the hands of “We the People,” the worst is yet to come.
“There should not be a million-dollar entry fee for participating in our democracy.”
