Shocking New Report Reveals Depths of ALEC Influence In Nevada (Full Report)

A blistering new report released last week by ProgressNow Nevada, exposes how deep the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has long influenced Nevada state politics.

ALEC is a secretive and uber-conservative right-wing bill factory supported by conservative Oil Billionaires Charles and David Koch. They use their dirty money to host Republican politicians nation wide on secretive junkets where ALEC members draft boiler-plate bills with the legislators. Additionally, ALEC started the Tea Party movement and are the driving force behind the attempt to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act (Obamacare), the controversial “Stand Your Ground” laws that swept the nation, anti-union “Right To Work” legislation, and a slew of other nefarious bills that seek to siphon public monies into private coffers, thus exacerbating the huge gap of wealth inequality that is crippling our nation and our social safety nets.

Key findings in the Nevada study reveal that, among other disturbing revelations, “ALEC legislation has been introduced to influence education, voting rights, worker’s rights, and gun violence prevention laws in Nevada.” Many of these bills re-direct public monies to private entities. In addition, “At least 10 current members of the Nevada Legislature have ties to ALEC.”

PR Watch – which published a story on the report – claims;

“the study cites recent state legislation that closely resemble “Special Needs Scholarship Program Act” and the “Foster Child Scholarship Program Act,” both of which send taxpayer dollars to private schools, or the “Great Schools Tax Credit Program” that gives a tax write-off for private school scholarships.”

Also according to PR Watch, when Progress Now Nevada asked for correspondence between legislators and ALEC via a Public Records Request, the Legislative Counsel Bureau responded on behalf of Senators saying ALEC communication was

 “…so inextricably intertwined with the policy-making and bill-drafting process that disclosure of the correspondence would inevitably reveal the Senators’ deliberations.”
