10,000 Everlasting GOP Stoppers!
Wow, 10k. I’m truly humbled and amazed by how this page has grown. I thank you all for being a part of it. I thought I’d take a few minutes to give you a little background on how we got our start.
When I started this page back in April, it was initially created as an outlet for my personal growing frustration in watching a political system being hijacked by a lunatic fringe of politicians that were clearly bent on obstruction, at the expense of our nation. I was keenly aware that I was too-often venting my frustrations on a regular basis on my personal Facebook page, and I had been following some large liberal pages – some of whom have given us tremendous support – that we really getting me fired up. One day the name hit me, and the rest, as they say, is history.
As it relates to my support of President Obama, you should know that although a registered independent at the time, I started supporting the Obama campaign both financially and as an informal activist, in March of ’07, less than one month after he announced his candidacy. I’ll admit that he made a serious impact on me when he spoke so eloquently as a senatorial candidate at the ’04 convention. He spoke of his humble roots, and of how his story was part of a larger, American story. He spoke of how there was no conservative America and no liberal America, but instead the United States of America. I knew, then, that this man was special, that this man had a deeper purpose, and that this was someone who could change the face of American politics; that this was someone who could champion the common man. Imagine how thrilled I was when a mere 3+ years later he announced. The audacity of hope. There was something deep inside me, something that just pulled at me when I watched that young senator from Illinois… I recall how proud I was on Election Day, and how emotional I was, knowing that I was watching history; that feeling of hope that this country can truly achieve its promise. I really do feel that all my energy, all my passion, all my conviction, that it REALLY MATTERED. I felt like I was a part of history, and I don’t know that I had ever felt more proud of my country than in that moment.
Now, of course, we’re all faced with the numbing reality that there IS a conservative America, and that there ARE elements among us that will resist at all costs a diverse, successful nation reflective of what we have – what we CAN – become. Forget about the embarrassing joke of a nation that George Bush handed to Barack. As president, I firmly believe he’s done his level best to restore the bulk of our luster. But this climate… this climate that we find ourselves in today… It scares me.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you our POTUS is perfect – he’s far from it. He’s made some decisions that have left me scratching my head, and others that have left me furious. But now, more than ever, I realize that this particular election is the most important election of my lifetime. And now, more than ever, I’m compelled to play my part.
And so, GOP Stoppers, this is it. This is our moment. Our nation is at, without any shadow of any doubt, the precipice. We can continue to grow the divide between the haves and the have-nots, we can continue to separate people by cultures, and skin color, religious and sexual preferences, and we can continue to allow the privileged elite to profit from our struggles, and set our gains back in immeasurable ways. Or, we can stand up and say NO! We will NOT allow that. This is OUR nation. My guess by your involvement in this page is that you want to live in an America where you can look to your left and say YES, you are an American and you can look to your right and say YES you are an American – and together we can achieve great things – but they will NOT be handed to us and so we have to just say FINE. FINE – we will fight for justice. FINE – we will fight for opportunity. FINE – we will fight for our vision of a truly great nation. But, perhaps most important of all, we refuse to surrender the audacity of hope.
And so now there are 10,000 of us, and growing still. Veruca and I are humbled and thank you for being a part of this. We have roughly two months until the next general election. I know, and Veruca knows, that you are here because YOU want to be that difference-maker. The next two months will not be pretty, but I can assure you all that they are the most important two months of your life.
Are you guys up for it?
