A Salute to the Soldiers in Wisconsin

Published On May 25, 2012 | By james |

Finally getting home and settled from a great time in Wisco. Tons of quality time with family, as well as quality time with some amazing and dedicated activists in the Scott Walker recall efforts. I’m stoked to be back home, close to the ocean, and looking forward to spending a Memorial Day weekend on the beach. Yet, I find myself troubled as the weekend draws near. I mean, what are we memorializing? Is this the country our brave vets fought for? Died for? Wisconsin is one of our nation’s heartlands – a beautiful state full of proud people – and it suddenly finds itself at the epicenter of a war for a country that has perhaps never been more divided. And those people… they’ve responded. They get it. If we as a nation allow our states to be hijacked by ALEC and the Koch brothers; if this next election does not send a clear message that we the people demand a nation that gives each and every one of us a fair shot, regardless of race, sex, sexual preference, religious beliefs, or any other qualifier that makes each of us an integral fiber in the fabric of this nation, than it’s not just about losing the gains of the last 3 years. It’s about losing the gains of the last 50. Wisconsin. Arizona. Florida. North Carolina…  our democracy is being bought by an extremely bigoted clan of thieves. And these thieves are emboldened only by apathy. Do your homework, people. Educate your friends. I urge you to also honor those people I met, those faces I looked into in Wisconsin. They are patriots as well, fighting a war of a different type, yet as noble as any. In the end, as we move into Memorial Day weekend and honor those that have paid the ultimate price, I can’t help but wonder, are we making THEM proud?? – James R
